Matt Eggleton // Cycling

Motto: “You can do it!”

Air Force Veteran Matt Eggleton loved football and rugby and was an occasional bike commuter, before catching the cycling bug from his daughter. His wife bought him a trainer so he could ride his bike indoors before work, and within a year, Matt had entered five mountain bike races, squared away his diet, and began a structured training plan. After finishing his first mountain bike marathon, the Munich MTB Marathon in 2014, “the confidence I gained impacted almost every other aspect of my life,” said Matt. He had envisioned the goal many months before, set out a plan, diligently prepared himself, and executed the plan. “This is now my simple four-step approach to coaching: vision, plan, prepare, and execute,” said Matt. “I realized, if I can do this, lots of other people can do this too!”

Now well into his 50s, Matt is living the second half of the USMES motto: “Fit for Duty, Fit for Life.” Over the past five years, he’s averaged 15+ races per season, took third place in his age group at Mountain Bike Nationals (Category 2), competes in the National Ultra Endurance Series of 100 mile mountain bike races (finishing in 4th place in 2019), was the Tour de Gravelly Overall Winner, and the Shenanduro 6 Hour Mountain Bike Race Masters Division Winner.

Matt now works as a Senior Program Manager for the Department of Defense, and is a Certified Professional Coach for executives, leaders, and officers across the staff at his agency. Outside the office Matt is a leader in the Washington, DC cycling community, organizing weekly group rides and regularly participating in trail building and maintenance days. In 2019 Matt earned his USA Cycling Level 3 coaching certification and now coaches several up-and-coming athletes (as well as a few seasoned masters) to achieve their very best. Matt’s 2020 focus events include the Croatan Buck Fifty, National Ultra Endurance Series, as well as our Tucson Camp.
