Shane Lee // Cycling

Motto: “Don’t mind the little things”

Shane Lee began racing while attending college and finishing his National Guard training, inspired by watching Lance Armstrong win the Thrift Drug Triple Crown of Cycling. Shane went on to complete an impressive string of endurance events, including the Dirty Kanza 200 on a single speed, the inaugural Paris Roubaix Challenge, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and L’Étape du Tour. Shane has also challenged himself by running five marathons, the 134-mile Hawaii Perimeter Run team event, and completing several biathlons and triathlons. Shane found that training and racing with juniors was one of the most rewarding experience of his life, so he created a running team for homeschool students, taking 14 teenagers who never run before and turning them into competitive 10k runners.

Besides coaching juniors and finishing DK200 on a single speed, Shane counts his major accomplishment as “finding my passion again after suffering from PTSD.” Shane knows what it’s like to be a veteran having difficulty relating to the non-military, and to feel like just another face with problems hiding in the shadows. Now he’s ready to help make PTSD one of the major focus points of the USMES and help members who are struggling to find their passion and feel like part of the team.

For 2020, Shane’s goal is to continue representing the Armed Forces in a healthy way and to share his experience of overcoming PTSD. And as a road and cyclocross Category 2 bike racer and a Pro mountain biker (as well as Pro auto racer) Shane will also be focusing on the Ouachita Challenge mountain bike race, Dirty Kanza, and Hotter than Hell.
